Beef Italiano --- My Recipe for an awesome, budget-friendly meal

This is a recipe that my grandmother taught me. It is very simple and very delicious. The meal doesn't cost a lot to make therefore, it is definitely a full, home-cooked meal that you can make on a budget. The beef, tomatoes, and Worcestershire sauce create an amazingly robust and flavorful au jus. I use the left over sauce for the pasta I usually make the following day for lunch. This meal feeds 2-3, but of course, all you have to do is double the amount of ingredients when you need to make more. I would suggest that you use a fairly wide pot to cook this because it is going to fill up a skillet as soon as you add the tomatoes. For those of you who want to use fresh tomatoes, you will need to dice up enough tomatoes to equal the same amount as two standard sized canned tomatoes.

  Ingredients:
  • 2 regular size cans of Diced Tomatoes
  • Rice
  • Broccoli Spears
  • 1lb of ground beef
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Oregano
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
 Directions:
  1. Boil water for rice.
  2. In Large pot sprinkle lots of oregano on the bottom and turn it on medium-low.
  3. Take the pound of ground beef and pat it out like a hamburger. make sure it's patted wide enough that you'll be able to evenly cut it for the amount of people eating.
  4. Place the ground beef in the pot and turn the heat up to medium.
  5. Sprinkle a lot of oregano on the beef and some salt and pepper with a little bit of garlic powder and let it start browning.
  6. While the beef is cooking, start the rice
  7. When beef is firm enough to cut into even pieces, cut it with spatula and flip them all over and push them back close together.
  8. Add the tomatoes to the pot but pour them around the meat not on top of it, distribute them evenly and make sure you poured all of the juice in
  9. Add even more oregano on top of the tomatoes and also add 5 good squirts of Worcestershire sauce.
  10. Reduce heat to low, add lid, let simmer for about 10-15 min.
  11. In a separate pot, steam the broccoli with a little salt, pepper and butter.
  12. Cut beef and check the center to be sure that it is done.
  13. Add butter to the rice and place a scoop in each bowl to make a bed of rice. then add the beef and tomatoes. Be sure to place au jus on top of beef and rice and place the broccoli on the side.
